Malawi Union of the Blind (MUB) organised a two day capacity building training for Rumphi District Education Network (DEN). The training was facilitated by MUB education coordinator, Mr Stuart Chauluka Rumphi DEN is composed of various stakeholders in the education sector, both government and non-governmental representing organisations working in the field of education, health and child rights.
The meeting was organised to sensitize the DEN members on the education of children with disabilities, encourage the DEN members through their organisations to promote and support initiatives of inclusive education and ensure its sustainability beyond the project period. During the meeting members of Rumphi DEN an action plan for the district was redesigned to help promote inclusive education at district level. Issues covered in the action plan included identifying barriers to inclusive education in the district as well as the solutions, instituting monitoring mechanisms for inclusive education as well as mainstreaming inclusive education.
During the closure of the meeting, members of the DEN appreciated MUB for the eye opener which has helped the participants to understand the barriers in the education of children with disabilities and how as both individuals and organisations they can play a role in the promotion of barrier free learning environment for learners with disabilities more especially those with visual impairments.
