MUB Empowers Visually Impaired Persons With Modern Technology

Financed by Norwegian Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted
(NABP) Malawi Union of the Blind (MUB) is carrying out an Economic
Empowerment Project in Chiradzulu, Mangochi and Nkhata bay. The
project will equip 90 (45 men and 45 women) visually impaired persons
with finance Literacy skills, small scale Business management skills,
Credit facilities and smartphones Literacy (through Talk-back/audial)
skills in order to enhance business survival&thrive chances.

The project has started in Mangochi where 15 women were given training
in business between 29 June and 1st July 2020. This training was
followed by a smartphone literacy training for 15 women and 15 men
between 29 and 31 July 2020. At the end of the project, the trainees
received smartphones. Latim Matenje (MUB’s Programmes officer) is
responsible for the project. He described the experience as “very
glatifying”, “we have given them skills and phones for communication.
They are excited and confident. I hope they will succeed. I hope
Mangochi district officials, to whom we are talking, will ensure that
persons with disabilities are reasonably accommodated and participate
meaningfully in Mangochi district’s socio-economic development,” he
said.
